For a number of years, submitting my photography to exhibitions felt like something I needed to do to prove, perhaps mostly to myself, that my work was worthy of being there. The acceptances came, as did the occasional award, and somewhere along the way I realized I no longer needed them to tell me what I had been trying to prove.
Since my last exhibition in 2024, I've chosen to experience photography differently. I've become less interested in creating an image with a juror, an exhibition, or even an audience in mind, and more interested in simply being present for the experience of making it. My photo adventures and personal projects have become opportunities to notice, explore, experiment, and be grateful for the moments nature allows me to witness.
I still love sharing my work, and I love when something I've created resonates with someone else. But these days, the approval that matters most is my own.
I haven't closed the door on exhibiting. If the right opportunity called to me, I'd happily walk through it. I just no longer feel the need to knock on every door to prove that I can.
